P1 – Practice intentional inquiry and planning for instruction

In this blog I will be discussing HOPE standard P1 (Practice intentional inquiry and planning for instruction). I believe the General Inquiry, Teaching and Assessment Methods class was a perfect fit to describe the P1 standard. The P1 standard is a call for pre-service teachers to learn about the complex process of designing a lesson. As a pre-service teacher I will be spending numerous hours this coming year creating and polishing my lesson design technique.

As evidence of my emerging skills at designing a lesson I provide a very small segment of a lesson plan that I created for the General Inquiry, Teaching and Assessment Methods class. The evidence is the section containing information on what students are expected to do during this part of the lesson (which is a book discussion activity). As requested for the assignment I have clearly labeled the expressive and responsive language that students are expected to do while participating in the activity.

  • Responsive Language: Follow along in the book with the group.
  • Expressive Language: Pronounce vocabulary words as directed by the teacher.
  • Responsive Language: Locate and use the glossary accurately.
  • Expressive Language: Read out loud to the group.
  • Expressive Language: call another student by correct name.
  • Expressive language: Answer questions about tennis.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behavior for a classroom setting

Although I have been a paraeducator for many years it is only recently that I’ve focused on the numerous ‘behind the scenes’ jobs that teachers must accomplish. Since my understanding is still at an emerging level I am still striving toward ensuring that my lesson plans are creative, complete and track from one segment to anther with learning objectives and measurements.

In working through the lesson design for the class I learned that there are numerous steps and hours of work that go into a properly prepared lesson plan. I learned the importance of making sure that my learning objectives are clearly stated and that they align with the assessments properly to accurately measure students achievement.

Being knowledgeable about creating effective lesson plans will directly impact the students in my classroom and how they learn because I will ensure that what I present to them is clear and precise. Regardless the age of the learner, all students benefit from a teacher who is well prepared and able to deliver a lesson with clear direction.

In order to further my understanding of effective lesson planning I will need to create more lesson plans and receive additional feedback on my work. I am open to ideas from others and want to strive to better my teaching skills.
