Class Dojo, Learning Tool Exploration

Standard

One of the things that has become increasingly important to me this year is finding ways to manage classroom behavior. I am currently working in a classroom with students who have numerous social and emotional concerns. There are many challenges throughout the day to keep students on task, focused and in a calm, ready to learn mindset. The current tool we use is a paper form simply called a ‘progress sheet’. Throughout the day staff use the form to track how a student is doing.

With the Class Dojo program the teachers can enter the information into their phones or computers. Students each get a funny monster icon to identify them. Teachers can share results just with individual students, or display the whole class list on the document camera. Another great feature is that parents can also log into the system to see how their child is behaving each day.

Teachers can look up a particular student to report or can ask the Class Dojo to pick a ‘random’ student, giving the teacher an opportunity to observe students at any given moment (thereby increasing the odds of catching a positive moment).  Students can hear the ‘ding ding ding’ of a positive (and see if the teacher chooses) or hear the ‘boowm’ negative sound if someone ‘needs work’.

The Class Dojo makes it easy to reset point values (for example at the start of a new class period). Also, Class Dojo also lets teachers take attendance, leaving them with a daily scoring sheet of just the monsters (students) that are there that day.

There are some limitations; such as a limited number of both positive and negative comments available. The teacher is able to choose from 3 ‘positive’ (participating, on task, working hard) or 3 ‘needs work’ (unprepared, off task, talking out of turn). It would be very beneficial for future versions if this allowed teachers to tailor these comments using their own wording. Another potential limitation is with the instant feedback available to parents, teachers may become bogged down with inquires from parents wanting to know the specifics of each scoring on the report. Overall, Class Dojo provides a quick and easy way for teachers to monitor student behaviors.

  1. I have never heard of Class Dojo or anything like it but I am very intrigued. This seems like a great way to engage with parents and enable them to have an image of how their children behave at school.
